UV Mapping = Done! (Maybe)

So I've finally finished the UV mapping after painfully slaving over it for days. I might come back to modify it if I really need to but for now it's DONE. My plan is to texture the model tonight and try to start animating in Blender tomorrow.

UV Mapping = AHHHHH!!!

For the past few days I have been stressing out about the whole UV Mapping thing. No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't do it, despite asking classmates for help and looking through many tutorials. So I asked Keaton to help out me after class today and he managed to make it look so easy! Afterwards I tried to do it myself and it's like Maya hates me cause it didn't work again... But after several hours, I finally managed to get something happening! The process is getting easier which is good. Here is a screen cap of my slow and steady progress...

Development Models + Possible Textures

My 3D Model in Development:

Possible Textures:

I have started attempting the UV mapping but I haven't had much luck with figuring it out. I'll try to look at some tutorials that might help.

Development Sketches II

I've modified my creature some more so that it looks more rodent-like. The head has been lowered to emphasise the body, since that is the important part of this creature. The back is raised to give more surface area for the paper to grow out of. There are 3 rows of paper growing out of its body - 1 row along the back and a row on each side.

Description

The reason this creature has been genetically modified from a rodent is because scientists have experience with rodents such as lab rats. They have applied the similar prinicples in genetically manipulating the rats into this rodent. This genetically modified creature exists to serve humans as a paper recycler. Its habitat would be a grassy enclosure where they can be closely observed and fed regularly. As well as eating grass as part of its diet, its main source of nutrients would come from the paper waste that humans create. As the creature takes in the nutrients from its diet, its unique digestive system re-mulches the paper and turns it into fibre. The intestines reject the paper fibres, which are alternatively directed towards the skin, where it is weaved together and finally extrudes out of its body.

WIP

Slowly working through the modelling in Maya. This is my work in progress...

The sketches I drew didn't seem to match up very well, even though it looked like it did when I imported them, but that's alright as I am still managing fine.

Character Development Sketches

I've changed the character's form a bit from the initial sketches, making it look more like a hedgehog unintentionally... I thought I'd start trying out some modelling in Maya so I have used these sketches as references. The paper fins weren't drawn on the body of the top and front views so that it would be easier for me to model for now. I was planning to add them straight in Maya

Project 1 Idea

As a new way of recycling, humans have genetically modified a rodent-like creature to be able to grow paper fins out of its back. The creature eats paper waste as its diet and through the creature’s unique digestive system, the paper is recycled resulting in layers of paper fins that grows out of its back. This paper is then ready to be plucked off of the creature and ready to be used.

This idea was inspired by a little creature in the anime, Those Who Hunt Elves, where there is a tiny bear-like creature, which excretes rolls of toilet paper for humans to use.

The creature would be highly domesticated as it was genetically modified for humans to harvest its paper. Could replace a paper shredder as it actually recycles the paper as soon as the creature consumes it.

Initial sketches of what it could possibly look like:
